IDENTIFICATION This spider is pale yellow with dark brown or black markings. The cephalothorax has a thin black rim as well as black spots at the bases of each leg. The femora have four black bands separated by pale yellow. The abdomen is variegated pale yellow or gray with dark markings. The spider hangs upside down above its distinctive cone-shaped web (see Fig. 27C).

OCCURRENCE This species occurs primarily in the Appalachian Mountains, the Western Allegheny Plateau, and a few locations further west. Most of the other 30 species have been found along the West Coast an in the Sierra Nevada. They have been collected from dark humid areas, often under overhanging rocks, or in caves or cave entrances. They have often been collected from rocks behind waterfalls.

SEASONALITY Adults: all year.

REMARKS The web is has a cone- or basket-shaped part and a flat sheet. The flat sheet is within the cone near the rock face to which the web is attached. The spider hangs under this flat sheet suspended above the cone.
